Now I have to work out the make up of the team. There are 4 choices for keeper - Gilchrist, Marsh, Healy and Dujon. If I go for Gilchrist, I will play 5 bowlers with him at number 6. If I chose one of the other 3, I will bat them at 7, choose 2 more middle order batsmen and play 4 bowlers.
So I think the first step, is to decide which keeper to use, as this pretty much decides the make-up of the team.
We'll take a look at the respective records. Now one thing that I like to use with batsmen is a little thing I call a refined average. What it basically is, it includes all their innings except for the innings in which they are not out for a score less than their normal average. (i.e. for Gilchrist, scores that he is not out for 57 or less are not counted in his refined average. These are his 45* v India, 0* v New Zealand, 10* v West Indies, 30* v South Africa.)
Adam Gilchrist 2434 runs at 57.95 Refined: 2349 runs at 55.93 159 dismissals at 4.30 Ian Healy 4356 runs at 27.39 Refined: 4228 runs at 26.59 395 dismissals at 3.32 Rod Marsh 3633 runs at 26.51 Refined: 3525 runs at 25.73 355 dismissals at 3.70 Jeff Dujon 3322 runs at 31.94 Refined: 3230 runs at 31.06 272 dismissals at 3.36
I think looking at that, and given all Gilchrist's aggression and the fact that he wouldn't be out of the team if he couldn't keep and the extra option he gives me, I'm going to go for him as the number 6 batsmen. He isn't the best keeper out of that group, despite having more dismissals per match than other three, but I think he is underrated as a keeper, and any mistakes that he may make are more than covered by his excellent batting.
So now the team is looking like this:
Herb Sutcliffe (England)
---------
Don Bradman (Australia)
---------
Gary Sobers (West Indies)
Adam Gilchrist (Australia) - wicketkeeper
Keith Miller (Australia) or Imran Khan (Pakistan)
---------
Malcolm Marshall (West Indies)
